Runway LightsRudi as a young PUPHot

Old ATC

Well, you guys can argue about who was the best controller but, hey, you had radar. We used to have to use flashlights. And that was a step up from Pappy's days when they had to use torches.

You don't have a clue about how easy you had it. Back in the good ol' days, the tech's only job was to run to the PX for more batteries. In Pappy's day, they had to gather wood. Of course they were courageous as they had the additional task of climbing the towers marking the air ways to replenish the supply of oil for the lamps.

You question my recollections? It took several controllers per aircraft as they had to place themselves on any high ground in the approach corridor to use their flashlights, not unlike a theater usher, to guide the pilots to the duty runway. Of course, if there were no high ground available, the techs had to provide really tall ladders.
